At Badger Paddles, we take our commitment to the environment very seriously.  We really "dig" the Earth!  That's why Badger offers a choice of OIL FINISHES for your paddle(s).  While we still recommend Grampa Badger's Oil (our standard oil finish - a mix of linseed oil, varnish and spirits); we also offer a 100% ALL NATURAL Paddle & Gunnel Maintenance Oil* that is safe for the environment and your health!


Badger Paddle & Gunnel/Gunwale Oil* - NEW for 2011 - is 100% All Natural Hemp Oil that has no harsh fumes and is even food safe.


That means you can use the oil on your paddles, canoe gunwales/gunnels*, wooden thwarts, etc., without worry the of harming the environment or the health & safety of your family or the lakes you paddle in. It can also be used to finish floors, decks, and furniture.

For those who “dig” the earth!

*Please note the spelling of “gunnel” is a modern variant of the word “gunwale”.  Both gunnel and gunwale are accepted today and, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, they are considered interchangeable.

**Our Badger Wood Oil/Badger Paddle & Gunnel Oil Eco-finish choice includes a minimum  of 10 coats of our Badger Wood Oil which includes Badger Wood Oil MIXED with varnish or dyers (citrus solvents) to give the best protection and to help speed up drying time for production purposes.  Maintenance, with our Badger Wood Oil/Badger Paddle & Gunnel Oil (100% all natural hemp oil) is totally non-toxic and food safe. Our Badger Wood Oil can be used over top of most old and dry oil finishes. Our Wood Oil can be mixed with citrus solvents/orange oil for a quick drying and all natural finish. Try mixing 4 parts hemp oil to 1 part citrus solvents if your paddle is in real need of maintenance. If the issue is just a quick regular maintenance coat of oil, then mix 2 parts hemp oil to 1 part citrus solvents. You can even do a quick coat/mix of 1:1 of each as well for the last coat of finish.

Our Badger Wood Oil is a food grade hemp seed oil that has been put through an oxidization process that allows it to harden when cured.

Instructions for use: First prepare the wood by making sure it is clean & dry. Sand where necessary & ensure the surface is free of loose particles & dust. Apply oil with a clean rag. Use a fine sandpaper to “wet sand” using the oil for lubrication. Let stand for a few hours to penetrate. Wipe away excess Badger Oil, if any, with a clean rag then leave to dry for 12 hours.Repeat if necessary. Number of coats determined by desired results, amount of use, and exposure to the elements. We recommend 10 coats minimum on bare wood. Drying time is approximately 24 hours. Please allow 12 hours between coats.Approximate coverage:3 square meters per litre. Provides a water resistant coating. Our wood oil is safe for food contact items like utensils, chopping/cutting boards and wooden bowls as well as furniture and more.
